Is baby perfume safe?
Perfumes explicitly designed for babies are safe and are highly regulated before they hit the market. Baby perfumes usually use water (Aqua) as the main component, natural ingredients like flowers, fruit, wood, roots, spices, musk from male deer, and more. Like many other manufactured products, baby perfumes also contain chemicals but are of high quality and safe for delicate baby skin. They are also regulated to make sure they are free of toxic chemicals, allergens, and other harsh things like alcohol.
Can you give baby perfume?
It is such a divisive question. Depending on where you live, this idea may seem strange to you, like how can you make the baby smell more heavenly than they already do, Right? Surprisingly, in places like Europe, this is normal, and their idea of baby smell is more fruity than “powdery.” The best answer is that it should be left to your personal conviction. I think it is merely an extravagance and not a necessity. After all, babies smell divine. But, if you really must put it on your baby, ensure the ingredients are safe.
Some notorious culprits to watch out for in the ingredients list are:
- Parabens- they disrupt the body’s hormonal system as well as the male reproductive system
- Phthalates (diethyl phthalate) – they are closely linked to cancers and other chronic illnesses.
- Synthetic musk- it contributes to organ toxicity, reproductive toxicity, and hormonal disruption.
- Styrene- it is a possible carcinogenic
- Benzophenone- it is associated with cancer and causes endocrine disruption
- Butyl compounds (BHA or BHT)- disrupt the endocrine system and cause reproductive toxicity
- Ethanolamines- can cause asthma and are also associated with liver tumors
- Acetaldehyde- increases the risk of cancer and liver cirrhosis.
Baby perfume for girls
Perfumes for baby girls are not made any special than those of baby boys. In my opinion, it is merely a marketing strategy. After all, regardless of gender, we expect them to smell like a fresh baby not to have adult scents. Most baby perfumes are gender-neutral. However, you can check the label- some state expressly it’s for girls. They could also have features targeting girls like using baby pink color on the packaging, drawings that are girlish, etc.
Baby perfume for boys
Perfumes for baby boys are not made any different than those of baby girls. In my opinion, it is merely a marketing strategy. After all, regardless of gender, we expect them to smell like a fresh baby not to have adult scents. Most baby perfumes are gender-neutral. However, you can check the label- some state expressly, it’s for boys. They could also have features targeting boys like using blue on the packaging, art, or designs with boyish themes, etc.
Can baby smell perfumes?
Yes, your baby can smell perfumes. Their sense of smell develops while they are still in the womb so that they can pick your scent to notice your presence once they are born without seeing you. They also pick the scent of your breast milk. The sense of smell creates a bond between mom and baby that the baby associates with safety and comfort. So, it is advisable not to wear perfume because it will be overpowering for your baby, especially in the early months, and may affect their sense of taste. On the other hand, baby perfumes are mild and are designed to create a special bond between mom and baby.
