Some Background:

In May 2018, Google approved 22 security cameras and baby monitors to integrate with Google Home Hub to make Google Home Hub baby monitors or the popularly known, ‘Google Home Baby Monitors.’

For some period, there was anticipation that Google was going to design a camera, a Google camera, and integrate it with the Google Home Hub devices.

They, however, dropped the plan and announced that it would approve security cameras that are compatible or can integrate with its Google Home Hub to create the Google Home Baby Monitors, also popularly referred to as:

  • Baby Monitor Google
  • Google baby monitors.

Home Security Cameras and Baby Monitor Integration

Select home security cameras and baby monitors that can integrate easily with Google Home Hub devices and utilize apps such as Google Assistant and Google Home speakers to enable you to monitor your child, with incredible convenience. Similar to Wifi baby monitors, Google Home Baby monitors can stream to your phone or to Google Home hub tablet.

The compatibility allows you to stream videos of your baby from the baby camera mounted in your baby’s nursery in real-time to your Google Hub devices.

Google is expected to approve more cameras such as Nanit Plus and iBaby which are currently not supported by the Google Home Hub.

The new generation Google Home Hub is only available on Google Store here.

Can I Use Google Home As A Baby Monitor?

If you purchase a Google Home compatible camera, you can turn your Google Home Hub into a baby monitor. Google Assistant can now be your second nanny.

Most security cameras, indoors and outdoors, can be turned into Google Home Hub baby monitors by following the steps we’ve listed below.

How Google Home Hub Can Be Turned Into A Baby Monitor

Follow the following three steps to set up any baby monitor with your Google Home Hub:

  1. Purchase the latest Google Home Hub, also called Google Nest Hub Max: When you purchase Google Home Hub, you get a 7-inch touchscreen display for $189. You can also get the older second-generation Google Nest Hub for about $59. To fully upgrade your baby monitoring experience at your smart home, you can also buy a thermostat to turn your Google Home into an accurate temperature baby monitor.
  2. Purchase Google Home Hub Compatible Camera: Once you have your smart Google home set up, you will then need to choose the best security camera or baby monitor that is compatible with Google Home Hub or Nest Hub Max. Google Home compatible cameras range from$ 30 to $300. Although some security cameras are considerably cheap, I highly recommend sticking with baby monitor brands except for those cameras with Advanced Encryption Standard, AES-256 dual encryption. Read the reviews of our top picks below.
  3. The final step is to integrate your Google Home Baby Monitor/Security Camera: Follow the instructions below to connect your Google Home Hub into a baby monitor.

Google Home Now Nest?

Google bought out Nest and Google Home Hub is now called Google Nest Hub. Google Nest Hub allows you to take advantage of Google Assistant and the following devices that are also compatible with Google Home Hub:

DeviceDescription
Chromecast or Chromecast UltraA streaming device that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port allowing you to stream your video from the baby monitor on the TV
Google SpeakersSpeakers that have Google Assistant installed.
Programmable/Learning thermostatSelf-programmable temperature regulator
Lifx Smart BulbsLED bulbs that change color, ideal for making night light to soothe the baby to sleep.

How to connect your camera to Google Home and make a Google Home baby monitor

  • Step 1: Set up the camera/baby monitor in the nursery: Follow the steps provided by the manufacturer of your camera/baby monitor to mount it on the baby nursery
  • Step 2. Connect your baby monitor/security camera to Google Home: When you open the google home app, verify your account and navigate to add a camera. If you’ll be streaming to your TV, link your TV using the Google Home app and Chromecast. The Google Home/Nest Hub Max or the TV via Chromecast will act as the parent unit of your baby monitor.
  • Step 3: You’re all set! Use voice commands to stream your camera feed to your TV or to your compatible device.

You are good to go! You can now officially depend on Google to monitor your baby. Ok, Google!

Google Home Hub vs Apple Homekit vs Amazon Echo

Smart home ecosystems are more popular than ever, and there are several big players in the game. Google, Apple, and Amazon all have their own versions of a smart home hub, which act as the central point for all of your smart devices. So, how do they compare?

Google Home Hub:

Google’s Home Hub is a small device that plugs into your wall and connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network. It has a built-in speaker and microphone, so you can use it to play music, make calls, or ask Google questions. The Home Hub also has a 7-inch touchscreen display that you can use to control all of your smart devices, including lights, thermostats, compatible cameras/monitors and more. It runs on Google’s Android operating system, so it has access to all of the same apps and services that your smartphone does.

Apple Homekit:

Apple’s Homekit is a software platform that lets you control all of your smart devices from your iPhone or iPad. It includes a built-in app for controlling your devices, as well as Siri voice control. Homekit also supports Apple’s AirPlay 2 standard, so you can use it to play music or video from your iPhone or iPad on your Homekit-enabled speakers.

Amazon Echo:

Amazon’s Echo is a small, cylindrical device that plugs into your wall and connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network. It has a built-in speaker and microphone, so you can use it to play music, make calls, or ask Alexa questions. The Echo also has a 7-inch touchscreen display that you can use to control all of your smart devices, including lights, thermostats, and more. It runs on Amazon’s Fire OS operating system, so it has access to all of the same apps and services that your Kindle Fire does.

So, which one should you choose?

If you’re looking for a simple way to control all of your smart devices, then the Google Home Hub Max is a great option. It’s easy to use and comes with all of the features you need to get started.

If you’re an iPhone or iPad user, then you’ll want to go with the Apple Homekit. It’s easy to use and comes with Siri voice control.

If you’re an Amazon Fire user, then the Echo is a good choice. It has a built-in touchscreen display and runs on Amazon’s Fire OS.

No matter which one you choose, you’ll be able to control all of your smart devices from one central location. So, pick the one that best fits your needs and get started on building your smart home today!

Reviews of Top Google Home Compatible Baby Monitors 2023

Nest Google Home Baby Monitor

Nest camera is one of the best-rated indoor cameras that can be turned into a baby monitor and is compatible with Google Home Hub. My favorite Google Nest Hub Baby Monitor is the Nest Cam Indoor which is its best-selling brand. Your Nest camera can be turned into a Google Assistant baby monitor and can take your commands to stream videos from the baby’s nursery when you want.

[content-egg module=Amazon products=”us-B00WBJGUA2″ hide=title disable_features=1 hide=price]

This camera can stream right to your smartphone, tablet, or to your Google Nest Hub using the regular 2.4 GHz wifi or using 5 GHz wifi. Unlike baby monitors that usually have poor resolution, the resolution in this camera is excellent with unmatched night vision images.

Nest which is now owned by Google designs and manufactures security cameras and this indoor camera which can stream videos like any other baby monitor lack some features that baby monitors have. For example, you’ll need to purchase Nest Aware subscription which starts from $6/month to stream continuously but can also opt for event-recording where the camera only streams whenever it detects your baby’s movement or any movement next to the crib.

Google Nest Indoor uses AC power and you need to have the plug on the wall or shelf where you are mounting this camera. Wires are hazards in baby nursery but you can hide them entirely using this Wiremold kit. Read about more mounting options here.

Nest does not have lullabies, night light, temperature sensors, or humidity sensors. Here are other features you can expect from the camera;

  • Works with Alexa, Google Home
  • 1080p HD video resolution
  • Instant push notifications
  • 24/7 streaming
  • 130 degrees field of view (similar to Arlo’s field of view)
  • 8x Zoom
  • 30 frames per second recording
  • Uses the Nest App
  • Two-way communication,
  • Motion, people and sound detection.

Below is a review by a parent who used Nest Google Home Hub as a baby monitor;

Biggest Disadvantage of Nest Cameras:

Nest requires a subscription to access camera footage and you can choose between the $6/m or $12/m plans below. Even though the price of Arlo and Nest Cam Indoor is comparable, Nest has a higher cost of cloud storage as shown in the table below:

While there haven’t been any widespread cases of Nest getting hacked, Nest cameras use a lower encryption standard, AES 128-bit standard. There are other secure monitors such as Miku Pro, Cubo Ai Plus, and Nanit Plus that use higher encryption standards, AES 256-bit encryption, and are almost impossible to hack.

Unlike most security cameras that have shine bright light during low-light conditions or at night like Ring Indoor cameras and are not ideal for baby nursery, Nest Indoor uses infrared LED that is not visible to your baby at night. It can still capture quality images without shining bright light that would disrupt your baby’s sleep.

Baby-Monitor-works-with-Google-home

Nest, the manufacturer of Nest Cameras has been bought by Google and Google Home Hub was renamed in Q2 of 2019 as Google Nest Hub.

If you want to monitor several babies, perhaps twins on your Nest, you can opt for the Nest Cam Indoor that comes with 3 camera pack.

Once the Google Home has been set up as a baby monitor, you can set up your app to send you notifications on your phone and stream videos on 1080p HD resolution.

To connect Nest cam to Google Home Hub, you’ll need the Google Home Hub iOS or Android app. If you connect your Nest cam to Google Home, you’ll be able to view your baby in the nursery using the Google Home hub’s 7-inch touchscreen tablet.

With the Nest cam, you are able to not only use enjoy a touch screen baby monitor that can respond to voice commands on the Google Assistant app. The resulting nest cam is a Google Assistant baby monitor that has the benefits of a wifi baby monitor, touchscreen baby monitor, and a 1080p HD video baby monitor, all combined in one Google monitor.

How to Connect Nest Cam to Google Home

Follow the following steps to connect your Nest Cam to Google Home Hub

  1. Mount your Nest cam on a flat surface at an angle facing your baby
  2. Download and install the Nest app on your smartphone
  3. If you haven’t downloaded, download and install the Google Home app.
  4. Open the Google Home Hub
  5. Click on the add “+” button on the Google Home app and you’ll see “add device button” as an option.
  6. Once you click the add device button, click on “Works with Google” option and it will take you to a list of all devices and other cameras compatible with Google Home
  7. Choose the Nest cam from the list (you’ll see their nest logo from the list)
  8. Login to your nest account and click “allow”
  9. Your nest cam will not be connected to Google Home Hub.

Google Home Commands That You Can Use with Nest

Once you’ve connected your Nest cam to Google Home Hub, you can control your Nest camera using voice commands. You can do this using Google commands. Some of the most common commands are below:

  1. “Ok Google, show me nest cam on baby’s room”
  2. “Ok Google, stop nest cam on baby’s room”

Wondering which one to go for between Nest Cam and Arlo baby for your smart home, watch the video below by Kevin, as he compares the two Google Home baby monitors:

Arlo Q Monitor Google Home

Arlo Q is another Google Home Hub baby monitor and I am updating this post to reflect the removal of Arlo baby monitor from this list of recommended Google Home hub devices. Google approved Arlo products to integrate with the Google Home Hub in May 2018 and with it, you can turn your Google Home Hub into a baby monitor!

There are now 7 Arlo devices (6 cameras + 1 baby monitor) that integrate with Google’s smart home and we’ve gone into detail reviewing and comparing each of them here.

You should note that some models of Netgear cameras are not compatible with Google Home Hub. The green discontinued model of the Arlo baby monitor does not integrate with Google Home and a few other wireless cameras are still not supported. These are the compatible Arlo cameras compatible with Google Home Hub.

Since our initial publication of this post, we recommended the Arlo baby monitor but over time, we’ve received several complaints about Arlo baby’s functionalities especially its video latency, software, and app issues. We had also been experiencing this for a while and since Arlo baby monitor is the recommended ‘baby product’ by Arlo, we kept our recommendation for some time.

In this update, we are officially recommending Arlo Q, another indoor camera by Netgear that does far much better than the Arlo baby monitor in almost all functionalities it has.

Below are some comments that convinced us to stop recommending Arlo baby monitor as a Google Home Hub compatible monitor:

  • “I rarely see the video stream on my phone using the Google home app, and I could never get it to stream to my Google home hub and Android”
  • “Google Home keeps disconnecting the Arlo baby monitor camera”

In our review of over 420 reviews that mention ‘Google Home’ more than 80% are complaints of how this monitor has issues connecting with the smart home. This led us to settle on Arlo Q, another cheap alternative Google Home compatible camera that can be used as a baby monitor.

Arlo Q Features:

  • Stream live video 24/7 and watch past recordings in sharp 1080p HD resolution
  • Free cloud storage for 7 days
  • Sends alerts whenever motion or sound is detected
  • Enhanced night vision capability

For unlimited video cloud storage for 30 days Arlo has 2 cloud storage plans one for $2.99/m for single-camera and another for $9.99/month for unlimited cameras.

Arlo Q – Indoor Camera For Google Home

Arlo Q gives you 1080p HD videos, night vision, 2-way audio, and 130 degrees field of view.

Unlike Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2, Arlo Q is not waterproof but is significantly cheaper. Its price is close to that of Arlo baby monitor.

While Arlo Q is designed as an indoor security camera, you can easily set it up in your baby’s nursery and follow the integration steps below and make it a Google Home baby monitor.

Integration of Arlo with Google Home Hub

With this integration, you can get to use other Google Home features such as the Google Assistant and Google Homes speakers.

The way you would engage Google Assistant for any other task, you can now say a command and Google Home Hub can cast Arlo camera feed on your Chromecast devices such as NVIDIA, Shield TV, and any other Android or iOS devices. You just tell google assistant; “Ok, Google, Show…” followed by where you want the camera to focus on.

One of the biggest advantages of using Google Home Hub as a baby monitor is that it allows you to tap into such as Google Speakers, Google Assistant, Thermostat, and several other home security appliances.

Arlo’s subscription rates are relatively cheaper compared to Nest Cam Indoor but are still more expensive compared to Ring’s subscription.

Arlo uses 2.4 GHz wifi and saves the data on the cloud. You can read about all the variations of Arlo in a separate comprehensive review of Arlo baby

How to connect Arlo Baby to Google Home Hub

You can follow the following steps to connect your Arlo Baby to Google Home to start using Google Assistant

  1. Get the Google Assistant app on your Android phone or iPhone
  2. Go to Assistant settings and select Home Control.
  3. Add your Arlo cameras to make the Arlo camera a google home baby monitor
  4. Ask away! Your Google Assistant is ready and your Arlo baby monitor google home hub is ready!

The video below shows you how you can connect your Arlo Pro 2 to Google Home Hub in less than 5 mins.

Arlo Baby Monitor Google Commands you can use:

Once you’ve connected Arlo baby and the Google Home Hub, you can utilize the Google Assistant app and its voice commands. Remember Google Assistant has access to the entire Google search database and this allows you to use voice commands and get the result you want. For example, you could ask Google to play a particular lullaby in the baby’s nursery and it will play it for your baby.

The commands will allow you to control your Arlo camera remotely. You don’t have to use your hands to remotely adjust the camera. For example, you can instruct it to cast the video feed from the Arlo baby camera on the tablet. The following Google Assistant commands will be very helpful.

To start cast, you say this command: “Ok Google, show (name of the room where the camera is, such as baby nursery) on (name of table/device)”

To stop the cast, you can use this command: “Ok Google, stop (name of Arlo camera or baby’s room such as baby’s nursery)”

It is, however, important to note that Arlo baby monitor is not compatible with Samsung SmarThings.

Our next Google Home compatible camera is Google’s Nest Cam Indoor. If you’re not totally convinced to go for Arlo, read below for our review of our second top Google Home baby monitor.

Nooie Baby Monitor

Nooie baby monitor is a recently released camera that integrates with Google Home or Nest Hub. It is very cheap, more than half the price of Arlo Q or Nest Cam Indoor. This smart camera costs less than $50 but since its release in late 2019, over 12,000 parents have rated it on Amazon, giving it an average of 4.2/5. Aside from Google Home Hub, Nooie baby monitor also integrates with Alexa home.

Here are the features of the Nooie smart baby monitor:

  • Nooie Cam 360 has 101°field of view
  • 1080P HD camera lens and two 940nm infrared LEDs.
  • Stylish setup – similar to Cubo Ai Baby Monitor
  • 2-way audio/talk intercom
  • Continous or motion-detection recording – You can store data on a micro-SD card or on the cloud. It supports a class 6 or above micro SD card that can load 4GB to 128 GB of footage. The micro SD card is sold separately and can get it on Amazon. You can use SanDisk Ultra 128 GB and avoid the cloud storage fees.

Logitech Circle 2 Google Home Baby Monitor

Logitech Circle 2 is another security camera that is compatible with Google Home Hub. This became a reality in May 2018 after Google approved it as a Google Home Hub compatible camera, along with Arlo and Nest cams.  Logitech renewed its old Logi Circle camera in 2019 and the new version has been significantly improved.

This camera works like other security cameras and does not continuously record videos but is event-activates. It only records 10 to 60-second videos when motion is detected and stores the footage in the cloud. However, with the free Logitech Circle plan without a subscription, you can stream continuously and access 24 hours of cloud storage but will need to select between $3.99/mo for 14-days cloud storage or $9.99/mo for 31-days cloud storage.

[content-egg module=Amazon products=”us-B0719LZMYG” hide=title disable_features=1]

Below are the features of Logitech Circle 2

  • Works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Homekit
  • 1080 HD video resolution
  • Instant push notifications
  • 24/7 streaming
  • Works with Alexa, Google Home
  • 1080 HD video resolution
  • 24/7 streaming
Baby-Monitor-works-with-Google-home

The pricing for Logitech Circle 2 is comparable to Arlo and Nest and actually has a slightly wider angle of view of 180 degrees against Arlo’s 130 degrees enabling you to monitor almost half the nursery and stream it to your Android device or Google Home hub compatible devices including Chromecast.

Unlike Arlo Pro 2, Logitech Circle 2 is a wired camera. There is however another Logitech Circle 2 that is wire-free. Here is the link to the wireless Logitech Circle 2. It also stores footage for the last 24 hours

It however still has the wire/USB cord but streams in 1080p HD video resolution. It also has a 180 degrees viewing angle. Logitech has received acclaim for its advanced encryption – AES 256 bit dual-layer encryption. It is very hard for hackers to get access to your Google Home when using the Logitech Circle 2 Google Home Hub baby monitor. You can read our full review of Logitech circle 2.

When you turn your Google Home compatible camera into a Google Home Hub baby monitor, you set yourself and your baby for the following:

1. Very easy to operate with Google Home Commands – Unlike other regular wifi baby monitors or non-wifi baby monitors, google home baby monitor can be controlled using voice commands. You don’t have to touch your parent unit or your smartphone to control the Google Home Camera. This gives you some incredible convenience especially if your hands are occupied. If you are in the kitchen and want to check on your baby, you can just say a google home command to start streaming video feed of your baby.

2. Accurate temperature monitoring with Google Home Thermostat – Google Home hub makes your house smart. One of the Google home hub devices is a thermostat which you can buy and install it on your baby’s room.  Unlike regular baby monitor cameras that come with temperature sensors installed in the camera, Google Home thermostats are known to be more accurate compared to regular baby monitors.  The best baby monitors such as Infant Optics DXR 8 has wild temperature readings that can be off by 20 degrees Celsius. This is because when the camera overheats, the temperature sensors that are next to the camera wrongly indicates that the baby’s room is hot when it’s not. If you live in a ventilated room and want a reliable temperature baby monitor, consider using google home baby monitors. With Google Home thermostat, you can ask Google Assistant to tell you the temperature in the baby’s room anytime or you can have the tablet display the temperature in the baby’s room anytime. The only disadvantage is that the Nest Learning thermostat are expensive (You can check the current price on Amazon here)

Can I use Arlo baby as a Google Home baby monitor?

Yes you can use Arlo baby to monitor your child using Google Home hub. Arlo baby integrates with Google Home and all you have to do is to follow the 4-step process to connect Arlo baby with Google Home Hub.

Can I use Google Home Mini as a baby monitor?

No, you cannot use google home mini independently as a baby monitor as it does not have a camera. Google Home mini does not come with a camera and this makes it hard for you to use it independently to monitor your baby. Google opted out of producing their own cameras and resorted to approving a list of approved cameras that can be connected to the google home.

Can I use Google Assistant as a baby monitor?

Google Assistant is a feature within Google Home Hub and can be used to assist you with monitoring of your baby if you purchase any of the compatible cameras. Google Assistant takes commands and can assist you to start a stream of video feed from your baby’s nursery. All you have to say is, “Ok Google, show me the baby’s room.”
Without having to manually adjust the cameras on the screen of your 7-inch Google Home hub tablet, Google Assistant enables you to monitor your baby with convenience as you just need to give it voice commands. Google Assistant can also tell you the temperature in the baby’s room (if the thermostat is installed in the baby’s room) or it can control the functionalities of a camera such as a zoom, pan, or tilt. Is there a Google Home Baby Monitor Mode in Google Hub?

It is important to note that the current camera or baby monitors compatible with Google Home are regular indoor or outdoor cameras. Google has not designed any features or a separate feature where you can switch from a security camera to Google home baby monitor mode. In other words, the functionality of the cameras will be similar to those of a regular camera or security camera. Even Nest and Arlo cameras, which are considered the best of Google Home baby monitors do not have a special baby monitor mode that will have features specific and applicable to monitoring or soothing of a baby such as lullabies, ambient noise, movement alerts, audio-only mode, local streaming, etc.

However, if you are connecting a baby monitor such as the Smart baby monitor by Project Nursery to Google Home hub, you can enjoy specialized baby monitor features. Essentially, you’ll have the full Google Home baby monitor mode capabilities. You can play lullabies, record sound or video, detect motion and get the temperature readings. The absence of Google Home baby monitor mode is one of the drawbacks to using a camera in your Google Home as a baby monitor.
