VTech Baby Monitor Frequency: Helpful Guide

VTech baby monitors use three radio frequency bands; the 1.9GHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequencies. This article goes through all the details need to know about VTech baby monitor radio frequencies used by different brands of VTech baby monitors available on the market in 2019.

VTech is one of the most popular baby monitor brand known mostly for its series of sound-only baby monitors including VTech DM221, DM111, DM112, DM223 and DM1111, DM1211 and DM2211, among others. Three of its brands are currently in the top 10 best-selling baby monitors on Amazon and they’ve been on the top-sellers’ list since 2015.

There are a few disadvantages to using VTech baby monitors. We have gone through thousands of reviews of various brands of VTech baby monitors and it appears that a concern that cuts across most reviews is the issue of VTech baby monitor batteries. VTech baby monitors issues are not related to the frequencies it uses but we always try to be very transparent with parents so they don’t end up with a product they didn’t anticipate.

Prior to using radio frequencies for communication, the first baby monitors including the Zenith Radio Nurse used the electrical circuit to transfer an audio signal from the baby unit to the parent unit. The advancement of technology introduced the world to radio frequency for use in gadgets such as TV, radio, cellphones and now in baby monitors.

VTech Baby Monitors Using 1.9 GHz Radio Frequency Band

VTech baby monitors that use DECT technology operate in 1.9GHz frequency band. This frequency band has its origin in Europe and in North America, DECT technology is named DECT 6.0 and below are some of the top-rated VTech baby monitors that use the DECT technology:

VTech DM221 DECT Video Baby Monitor

VTech DM221 is a VTech brand baby monitor that uses 1.9GHz frequency also called DECT technology in North America (US & Canada). While VTech was an early adopter of the DECT technology in North America following its initial roll-out in Europe, VTech’s 1.9 GHz-frequency audio baby monitors including DM221 have been received very well in the market.

The original VTech DM221 was released in 2012 and was first available for sale in Amazon on March 22, 2012. Since then, it has been in the top 10-selling baby monitors and as of this publication, VTech DM221 is the third best-selling baby monitors, behind other top-rated baby monitors specifically, Infant Optics DXR 8.

VTech Baby Monitors Using 2.4 GHz Frequency Band, FHSS

A number of VTech baby monitors operate in the 2.4GHz frequency band but do not rely on the internet as other Wifi baby monitors in the same 2.4GHz frequency. Non-Wifi VTech baby monitors operating in the 2.4GHz frequency band use a Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology. Below are some VTech baby monitors that use this FHSS technology:

1. VTech VM321 Video Baby Monitor

VTech VM321 Video Baby Monitor is my favorite FHSS baby monitor that operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency. FHSS baby monitors are hack-proof as signals get transferred from the baby unit to the parent unit by hopping from one sub-frequency to another sub-frequency using unique parameters that secure the communication.

FHSS technology was invented in 1941 and it powered secret communication by the Allied Forces and it wasn’t until the 1990s that the technology was introduced to be used in household gadgets. You can read more about FHSS baby monitors here.

VTech VM321 video baby monitor is perhaps one of the few video baby monitors that sell for under $100 (as of the publication of this article).

VTech Baby Monitors Using 2.4 GHz Frequency Band With Wifi

A number of VTech baby monitors that rely on the 2.4GHz frequency band require wifi to operate and below are some wifi-enabled baby monitors by VTech:

1. VTech VM981: VTech Wifi Baby Monitor, 2.4 GHz

VTech VM981 is our favorite 2.4 GHz-frequency wifi baby monitor by VTech. VM981 is among the few baby monitors that we’ve reviewed that can support multiple cameras. VTech VM981 supports up to 10 cameras similar to security cameras such as Nest and Arlo cameras.

You can read our full review of VTech VM981 here.

VTech Baby Monitors Using 5.0 GHz Frequency Band

5.0 Frequency band is a different band used by wifi-enabled VTech baby monitors.

VTech RM5752: 5.0 GHz Frequency

Below is a review of VTech RM5752 video baby monitor which uses the 5.0 GHz frequency that has limited interference compared to those that use the 2.4 GHz, frequency band.

The VTech RM5752 Wi-Fi Remote Access Video Baby Monitor features soothing sounds and lullabies that play right from the camera unit to help baby sleep tight. This fixed baby camera has a wide-angle viewing up to 120 degrees to watch over your little one from anywhere in the house or out in the yard. Even after dark, you’ll be able to see your baby clearly thanks to automatic infrared night vision. Use voice commands to view the RM5752 camera on compatible Alexa and Google Assistant devices.
